Distinguished and Famous people from Tongala
🏉 Harley Reid
Harley Reid's rise towards AFL football was closely watched in Tongala, where family, club and community life had shaped his junior years. Before the draft attention became intense, he was also the teenager working at the local pub's till, ready with a quick remark. His 2023 season involved an extraordinary wardrobe of team jumpers: Tongala, the Bendigo Pioneers, Vic Country, the AFL Academy and VFL appearances for Essendon and Carlton. Those opportunities showed his ability at progressively higher levels while he continued representing his home club. The scale of the attention changed dramatically, but the sporting family and small-town setting behind it remained an important part of his story.
🏅 Bob Dawson
Bob Dawson played a prominent part in Tongala's 1949 premiership, sharing the club's best-and-fairest award with captain-coach Dave Newman. The following year he won both the club award and the Goulburn Valley league's leading-player honour. Earlier, he had made three VFL appearances for St Kilda and won a Bendigo league best-and-fairest with Elmore. His influence at Tongala continued through nearly two decades coaching juniors and work helping establish the league's thirds competition. The playing record was substantial, but so was the time devoted to giving later generations a start in the game.
